Today is the day of important topics my friends, and that topic is our skin. It is necessary to nourish and treat the skin we’re given with respect. After all, skin is forever. Our confidence and the way makeup looks all depends on our skin’s condition. Being a makeup artist, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of wonderful people and I know I sound like a broken record when I say that getting to know our skin is so crucial. It is completely normal to break out, have redness and be sensitive. That’s the beautiful thing about skin – it is perfectly imperfect!
Like everyone else out there, I too have a skincare story. When I was in high school, I had the typical teenage complexion which was oily and filled with lots of random and confusing pimples. I had no idea what I was doing and I was not taking care of my skin at all. That all changed in college when I was forced to learn how to care for my skin. I developed Eczema which ruined my life. It made me very insecure and I felt like I had to hide my skin.
My doctor did recommend cortisone cream for my Eczema breakouts which I used. However, that itself was not the solution and my Eczema kept coming back. Looking back now, I feel that my Eczema was a blessing in disguise because it made me really invested and determined on coming up with a solution. I tried countless of products, researched ingredients and constantly changed my routine! Even today I am still learning and trying new things to better my skin. I am in no shape or form an expert but I do have a good sense of what works for me and what does not.
I really want to share my rules or tips regarding skincare. Some of these might be obvious but they are equally important!
1. Understand Your Skin Type
It is really important to know what your skin type is. Only then can you properly treat any problems and care for your skin on a regular basis. What works for a dry skin type will not work for an oily skin type and vice versa. Also, it is very normal to have more than one skin type on your face. What I mean by that is, some might have dry cheeks and an oily t-zone. Others might experience dryness on the forehead and a greasy chin. Pay attention to how your skin feels when you get out of the shower, when the seasons change and how products make your skin feel and react. Your skin will tell you how it feels and what it needs!
2. Health Is Wealth
Fill your body with lots of fruit, veggies and water! These are golden and will show in your energy and skin. Don’t get me wrong, you have to enjoy life, it is complex enough as it is. Sometimes you need pizza and a glass of wine and that is okay. Make it a point that your body is receiving all of the delicious nutrients that healthy food supplies us with! If you smoke, know that it is not doing your skin (or your life) any favours. We all know what smoking does so I’m not going to preach about that. Same for drugs. These things are just aging you at an accelerated rate and are affecting more than just the skin.
3. Take Your Makeup Off!
When I think of people going to bed with their makeup on, I get so stressed out that my eye starts twitching. I know that’s dramatic but… seriously! Throughout the day our face has so much bacteria from every day life including the makeup we wear. So just think how stressful and problematic it is for our skin if we do not remove our makeup and wash our face. Being exhausted or having a late night are not good enough excuses for me to go to bed with a dirty face.
Whether you have normal, dry, combination or oily skin, you MUST moisturize! You can use a light or heavy cream. Even an oil if that is your choice of potion. Please, just moisturize when you wake up and before you go to bed. Plain and simple!
5. Beauty Sleep
Life is so busy and things like family, friends and work are pulling us in different directions at all times! Sometimes it is so beneficial to say no (as hard as it is) to a late night out and go off to dreamland! When we sleep, our skin is resting and regenerating and it’s important to give our skin and our body time to relax! Someone once said to me that sleep keeps us young and I think there is a lot of truth to that.
6. Hands Off!
This is a tough one but when I am not home, I make it a point not to touch my face. Our hands are naturally dirty and are magnets for bacteria. We use them for every single task on a daily basis so just imagine what happens when we touch our face? Sure, there will come a time where you are forced to rub your eye or wipe something off, but just remember to wash your hands beforehand. Turning this into a habit is the key.
7. Do Your Research
One of the most important factors in buying skincare is research. Question everything. Keep in mind that the beauty industry is a business and money talks. Please do not take someone’s word for it because at the end of the day, their skin is different from yours. Ingredients are king and knowing which ones are beneficial for your skin will help you find the right products. For example, I really love Rose or Rosehip Oil. It really keeps my Eczema at bay and it is very moisturizing. Naturally, I am very attracted to products that contain these oils because I know how beneficial they are!
8. Be VERY Selective!
This one has served me well in many ways. It ties into research and ingredients as well. Once you start doing your research on ingredients, brands and how everything is made, you become very selective on who you chose to give your money to. In the long run, you end up saving money! I have a couple of rules that I follow when I am deciding whether to purchase a product or not. Personally, I refuse to buy from a company that tests on animals. I go for brands that are more so on the cleaner side and do not use a lot of “filler” ingredients that have no business being on my skin. These are just my rules but form your own rules that are right for you!
9. It’s All About Trial And Error
This is the frustrating part of skin care because it involves so much time and money spent. However, trying products is the only way we can discover what products are right for us. Sometimes things work and other times they give us a reaction. Do not be afraid to ask for a couple of samples! I am a big fan of mini sets because the price is always cheaper and you get a good feel of what that brand has to offer and if it works for you.
10. Quality Over Quantity
Skincare really is an investment! An expensive one for sure, but if you do it right, it will pay off. Do not get fooled by the way something looks or by how much buzz it might be getting. Always follow products that have quality to them. When it comes to skincare, I honestly believe that luxury, organic and clean brands are the better choice.
11. Patience Is A Virtue
Remember that good things take time and healthy skin is no different. It takes 30 days to form a habit so please do not get discouraged if you are not seeing positive changes instantly. I am 31 years old and I have been taking care of my skin with a very diligent and strict skincare routine since I was 20 years old. Once you achieve the skin you have worked for, know that it does not end there. A healthy complexion is a journey and maintaining healthy skin is hard work!
